Set at the junction of the High Street and St John's Street, an effective
terminal feature to Long Street qv, down which it faces.
Mid Cl9. 2 storeys, attic and basement. Bath stone, on projecting splayed
plinth. Moulded string over ground and lst floor windows. Parapet with
moulded coping. Central curved and ogee-headed gable with parapet coping
carried round, and with central carved and pierced finial. Small central
attic casement, moulded stone surround with head of 2 opposing inverted
segments, central mullion and dividing arches forming 3 lights. Three 9-light
large moulded stone mullioned and transomed casements on lst floor. 2 similar
on ground floor, and central double doors each of 2 splayed panels in plain
arched surround with moulded band at springing, and with imposed porch of
engaged Doric columns supporting plain frieze and cornice lining with lst
floor string. Carved scroll keystone to arch. Over each outer window the
parapet has panel of pierced quatrefoil type, with cresting over of central
cut circle crowned with pierced finial, and with cut stone side scrolls
and secondary finials. Main door approached by double flight of 5 steps
and bridge over area, with pierced stone balustrading.
