Greystone House

Built between 1740 and 1744. 3 storeys. Elaborate front of Bath stone
to brick building with hipped slate roof. Projecting terraced plinth with
moulded coping, approximately 2 ft 6 ins high. The front is composed of
a slight1y projecting central part, and angle piers full height, carrying
a bold moulded and dentilled stone cornice with a segmental pediment over
centre, and tall parapet with moulded coping.
The Centre has - tall 8-panel door in stone surround of 3 quarterr Doric
columns and entablature with triglyph and rosette ornament to frieze and
modillion cornice with rosettes between modillions. Above the door at 1st
floor level, a central niche in rectangular panel with surround of 3 quarter
Ionic columns and entablature with curved frieze, bracketed cornice and
pediment. On 2nd floor a central window. On each floor the central motif
is flanked by narrow arched windows with side pilasters and banded arch
with keystone. The side bays have one window each, altered on ground floor
to plain Cl9 angular bays. All glazing bars altered. Original cast lead
rain water head on left hand return side. Contemporary panelling, fine
plasterwork and staircase.
Greystone House is in a prominent position at the junction between High
Street and Long Street qv.
Greystone House forms a group with the Elm Tree Inn and Nos 2 and 3 Long
Street.
