Co-operative shop premises now bank with health club above to 1st floor.
c1898 with mid-late C20 alteration to ground floor. Ashlar, modern tile
wall to ground floor. Welsh blue-slate and lead roof. 3 storeys. Fills
a corner site. Corner bay has doorway and curved windows to each floor
surmounted by octagonal turret in the onion-shaped dome. Facade to Queen
Street, to left of door, has 5 bays. Facade to Albion Street has 7 bays.
All are articulated by pilasters with carved capitals. 1st floor has balustrade,
dentil cornice and windows with basket arches and 3 consoles with impost.
2nd-floor windows have 3-light mullioned and transomed window. 5th right-hand
bay breaks forward and has large doorway with keyed arch, pilasters, brackets,
entablature and swan-neck pediment, the tympanum with carved festoons. Set
above 2nd-floor window is segmental pediment the tympanum with carved motto
"LABOUR AND WAIT". Above this is pavilion roof with ornamental wrought and
cast-iron cresting. Mansard roof with continuous dormer window. Rear elevation
of rock faced stone with 4-storey turret staircase. Included for group value.
