Retirement homes for miners. Now Old People's Homes. 1914. For
Miss M. Hardstaff. Stripped Jacobean revival style. Brick
with ashlar dressings and hipped and gabled Westmorland slate
roofs. Coped gables with kneelers. 2 external side wall stacks,
each containing a small casement, and single roof stack. 2
storeys, 4 bays. C-plan. Windows are metal casements with
moulded ashlar mullions and reveals and hood moulds. Doors have
moulded architraves with elliptical heads and hood moulds and
original furniture. Rainwater heads are dated 1914. South
front has projecting gabled wing at each end. To right, a door
flanked to left by single and to right by 2 casements. Beyond,
door flanked to right by a casement and to right again, tiny
casement in chimney breast. Return angles have each a door.
Above, 4 casements. East end has late C20 flat roofed glazed
porch and door. To right, a casement. Above, flat-roofed cross
eaves dormer. Rear elevation has 4 gabled single storey
outbuildings and regular fenestration with leaded casements with
segmental heads.
