Sugar Silo

Sugar silo. 1955-57. Designed by Tate and Lyle's Engineering
Department and constructed by Cementation Ltd. Reinforced
concrete with pre-stressed concrete floor. Parabolic tunnel
vault, rectangular in plan, comprising 12 sections each with 6
external ribs. Loaded via conveyor belts running in a housing
which stretches along the top of the structure. Both ends also
of ribbed reinforced concrete, with windows and doors. Interior
comprises a single unbroken space with a central channel in the
floor containing hoppers for the reclamation of the sugar, which
dropped onto a conveyor belt in a tunnel beneath. Smooth sides
to the vault with a plimsoll line marked along the sides for the
guidance of operatives in loading the silo. A rare and impressive
example of a reinforced concrete parabolic tunnel vaulted storage
