NORMANTON HIGH STREET SE 32 SE (east side) 2/52 The Cross and Signpost 15.1.76 - II
Stump of market cross, perhaps medieval, surmounted by lamp-post (formerly also sign-post) added in 1904. Sandstone and iron. Stone base square in section and approx. 1 metre high, tapered. Cast-iron lamp-post attached to top of stump by square clasping-socket with moulded cap surmounted by 4 dolphins with tails erect to the base of the lamp standard, which is decorated and has arms or branches on 3 sides with scrolled wrought-iron brackets to these and to the ladder-bar above; former pendants from the branches, in the form of inscribed cartouches, missing at time of survey (1986); but terminal lantern restored.
