Newlands farmhouse and adjoining

GV II

Farmhouse and adjoining cottages, now house and cottages, and
adjoining boundary walls and railing. Mid C18 with early C19
and mid C19 alterations and additions. Coursed squared stone,
partly rendered, with ashlar dressings and slate roof with 3
ridge and 2 gable coped stone stacks. L-plan.
EXTERIOR: coped gables. 2 storeys; 7 window range. Windows are
mainly 16-pane glazing bar sashes. House has 2 sashes and
below, to right, another sash flanked to left by a canted
flat-roofed wooden glazed porch in the return angle, covering
a 9-panel door with overlight. To right, a slightly lower
range, rendered, with 16-pane sash to left and an 8-pane sash
to right. Below, door flanked by single 16-pane sashes. To
right again, rendered cottages with 3 sashes, and below, 3
similar sashes, the central one flanked by single half-glazed
6-panel doors. Both doors have plain stone surrounds, the left
one with cornice. Left wing, formerly a ballroom, has a brick
gable stack. Central 6-panel door flanked by tall 12-pane
sashes. To left, a single storey outbuilding, now garage, with
a brick gable stack.
INTERIOR not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: outside the cottages, a low stone
boundary wall with chamfered coping and wrought-iron railing,
with 2 pairs of square stone gate piers and a single
wrought-iron gate. Between the house and cottages, dividing
walls, the left one brick, the right one stone. To right, a
higher wall with flat coping, incorporating a toilet.
Adjoining the garage, a stone retaining wall with half-round
coping and 2 square gate piers, parallel to the boundary wall.
