Gates, railings & boundary walls to
Arkwright Building

GV II

Gates, railings and boundary walls. 1877-1890. By Lockwood &
Mawson. Ashlar, cast and wrought-iron. Extends the full width
of the Shakespeare Street front and along the left return,
approx 90m x 80m. Along the right return, approx 20m.
In the centre, 2 pairs of iron gates with iron intermediate
piers and octagonal ashlar end piers with spire tops. Beyond,
low ashlar boundary wall with chamfered coping and square
pedestals on plinths, with a single rail on cast-iron
stanchions.
Part of the original architectural scheme of the university
college.
