Former police and fire stations at
the Guildhall

GV II

Former police and fire stations, now offices. 1887-88. By
Verity & Lambert of London. Darley Dale ashlar, with
Westmorland slate roofs. Renaissance Revival style.
Plinth, cornice, first floor sill band, eaves cornice,
blocking course with urns. Coped gables with 3 large corniced
stacks.Windows are plain sashes with stone mullions. Adjoining
blocks, each 2 storeys plus basement; 3 window range.
Police station, to left, has a projecting centre with
round-arched doorway, and above it, a single window. On either
side, on each floor, tripartite windows.
Fire station, to right, is topped with a domed wooden bell
turret and finial. To left, a cart entrance with half-glazed
doors, and to right, 2 small 3-light windows. Above, three
2-light windows. Right return has to rear a square tower, 2
storeys, with balustrade. Attached to the return, a
wrought-iron overthrow and lamp bracket.
