Hotel. c1872, altered C20. Red brick and stone dressings,
slate roof; corbelled cornice, parapet with quatrefoil panels,
pavilion roof and gabled dormers with pointed-arch windows and
finials; moulded stone chimney caps. Large Gothic Revival
style building on corner site.
5 storeys and attics. 2, and 3-light windows throughout; the
Boar Lane frontage 3 windows wide, the Mill Hill frontage 5
windows, with an oriel window and clock to corner. Clock has
letters GRIFFIN HOTEL in place of numbers. 1st floor, round
arch lights with inverted semicircular lights above; 2nd
floor, rectangular lights with rounded corners and shafts
terminating in finials below 3rd-floor round-arched lights
with pilaster shafts; 4th floor, pointed arches with pilaster
shafts.
C20 hotel and shop fronts to Boar Lane; blocked doorway with
pilaster shafts, carved capitals and finials to centre of Mill
Hill frontage. Moulded and carved string courses at window
head and sill levels. Boar Lane side has moulded stone shafts
between bays, terminating with finial and gargoyle. Corner
details: stone oriel to 1st and 2nd floors, clock face in
pointed-arch recess with traceried panels and flanking
corbelled shafts with finials; parapet and pavilion roof above
corner. Mill Hill elevation: central 2nd and 3rd floor oriel.
Continuous ironwork cresting over ground floor.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
Stands on the site of the earlier Griffin Hotel, a coaching
inn from at least the C17; rebuilt as a railway hotel, serving
the Leeds New Station opened in 1869 and owned by the joint
London and North West and North East Railway Companies. The
original Queen's Hotel (demolished) in City Square was similar
in style.
