Well cover. Dated 1788. Moved slightly from original position
c1926. Gritstone slabs, wrought-iron supports, approx 1m high
and 0.8m wide, rectangular in plan, pyramidal capstone with
iron staples. S side, round-arched opening; N side,
inscription in fine incised and abbreviated lettering. 'Bog in
the adjoining field drain'd,/ spring open'd,/ and conducted
hither/ For the benefit of the Passenger,/ and the
neighbouring House/ Novr 5th, 1788/ the 100th Anniversary from
the land'g of/ KING WILLIAM/ in memory of which happy AEra,/
this is by Joseph Oates inscrib'd/ THE REVOLUTION WELL.'
Joseph Oates, of Weetwood Hall, inherited Carr Manor House
(qv) on the death of his father in 1779 and undertook building
work and land improvements on the estate.
