The Limes

GV II

House. Late C18. Timber-framed and rendered with half-hipped
gambrel plain tile roof.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic and cellar; 3-window range;
2-storey rear wing. Front has plain parapet and tripartite
sash with central vertical glazing bar, either side of a
single similar sash, on the 1st floor. The ground floor has a
central pedimented doorcase with pulvinated frieze, shouldered
architrave and door with 4 recessed panels above 2 reeded
panels. Flight of 3 stone steps with iron boot scraper and
either side, a canted bay window with slate hipped roof and
sash windows with single vertical glazing bars.
The northern flank has a square sash window, to attic, with
margin glazing bars and, on the ground floor, a 12-pane flush
sash. The 2-storey rear extension of rendered timber-framing
with a stripped gabled roof at time of survey. The back wall
of main block has 2 tall brick stacks and a gabled dormer with
2-light casement. Also rear entrance door and one window
opening.
INTERIOR: first-rate timber-frame of period with little reused
timber. Central entrance hall with dogleg staircase having
column-on-vase balusters and moulded strings. The rear
entrance has much C16 reused timber. The cellar of main block
contains curious oval-shaped brick basin of uncertain purpose.
