Formerly known as: Hillcrest Temperance Hotel MARKET HILL.
House, now offices. Late C18 or early C19. Timber-framed and
rendered with half-hipped gambrel roof. L-plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attic, cellar and rooftop belvedere;
3-window range. The belvedere has hipped slate roof and is
glazed on 2 sides with horizontal-sliding small-paned
casements, and is of white weatherboarding on other 2 faces.
Front has three C20 dormers with segmental tops and 9-pane
sash windows. Painted timber dentilled eaves cornice. 1st
floor has a 16-pane flush sash window, either side of a
12-pane sash. Ground floor has a central pedimented doorcase
with pulvinated frieze, fluted Doric pilasters and 4 steps
with C20 wrought-iron handrails; the pair of doors each have 2
raised-and-fielded panels over flush panels. Either side are
flat-roofed bow windows with 16-pane sashes.
The south flank is of white plastic boarding and there is one
12-pane sash window and metal escape balcony to attic; one
16-pane sash to 1st floor. The north flank of main block has
one 12-pane sash window to 1st floor. The rear wing is of 2
storeys with gabled plain tile roof and has two 12-pane sash
windows on each floor of north wall. To the rear is a
parallel, 2-storey brick C19 block with slate roof.
INTERIOR: entrance hall has original door architraves, and
dogleg stair with column-on-vase balusters between 1st and
attic storey. Southern ground-floor room has contemporary
panelling with elliptical-headed keyed niches either side of
fireplace, and overmantel with pulvinated entablature over
eared and shouldered architrave. The northern ground-floor
room has plaster cornice, simple panelling and early C19
marble fireplace. Some C17/C18 panelling in attic and on
stairs.
