TL8407SE LONDON ROAD 574-1/6/154 (South West side) 25/02/94 County Court and frontage wall with gate piers

County Court. 1858. Grey Gault bricks with ashlar dressings and roofs invisible behind parapets. PLAN: large building with tall single-storey range to front and taller block to rear of site. EXTERIOR: symmetrical front of 7 bays with end bays breaking forward. Stone dentilled cornice with console brackets and central stone free-standing Royal Arms on top of parapet. This has a stone panelled base inscribed: 'DIEU ET MON DROIT' in Egyptian letters. Centre has 5 semicircular-headed double-hung sash windows set within semicircular-arched recesses, each with brick flank pilasters with stone capitals. Each arch has a stone keystone, and the moulded sill runs continuous, with raised brick apron panel below. The projecting end bays have brick rusticated pilasters and paired entrance doors at head of flights of 3 stone steps. Continuous stone entablature over with superimposed semicircular window with rubbed brick arch, expanding upwards to meet tall brick keystones. Tall stack on front range with consoles in stone. Frontage has 2 entrances with contemporary brick and stone gate piers, linked by low wall with stone saddleback coping. INTERIOR: not inspected. Similar in general character to courthouse in Braintree, Essex.
