Library. Dated 1904 on foundation plaque to left of entrance.
Accrington brick with sandstone dressings, green slate roofs
with red ridge tiles, stone turret with copper cap. Edwardian
Baroque style.
PLAN: square plan comprised of a nave with side aisles under a
3-span roof with a front range under a hipped roof parallel to
the road.
EXTERIOR: single-storey plus turret, 3 bays, with a central
entrance bay flanked by a gabled bay to the left and a
balustraded bay to the right. The entrance, which projects
slightly and slightly overlaps the flanking bays, is of
sandstone ashlar above sill level, with pilasters, a plain
frieze, modillioned cornice, balustraded parapet and central
dome, and has a segmentally-bowed centre with set-in Ionic
columns forming a porch to a recessed doorway, flanked by
pairs of small 1-light windows. Both outer bays have large
mullioned 3-light windows with glazing bars, and mutuled
cornices; that to the left has a stepped and shaped gable with
a segmental-pedimented aedicule at the apex, and that to the
right has a balustraded parapet. Rising behind the entrance
bay and offset left of centre is a 2-stage turret, the lower
stage square and of brick, and the upper stage octagonal and
of stone, with console supporters, a clock face to the front,
and an arcaded top with ogival domed roof and finial. Five-bay
side walls in similar but simpler style, with paired sashed
windows. Three-bay rear with tall triple sashes.
INTERIOR: nave and aisles almost a single space, open to the
roof.
