Description

SS 62 NW CHITTLEHAMPTON HIGH STREET (north side)
Chittlehamton
1/139 Windy Thatch, Rolle Arms and
- Hope Cottage (formerley listed as
20.2.67 Nos.1-3 Rolle Arms)
GV II

-.
3 adjoining cottages. C17 or very possibly earlier fabric concealed. Painted
rendered stone rubble end cob. Thatch roof, hipped to front wing at left end, gable
end to right. Brick stack at right end, shallow rounded stack at left end, 2 rear
lateral stacks, that to left rendered with offsets, that to right with tapered cap,
and unrendered stone rubble stack to gable end of rear wing.
Plan: as interiors not accessible, the full plan and development could not be
assessed. The 3 cottages may well have originated as a single tenement of 3-room-
and-cross-passage type, with lower end to right, with wings later added in the C17
and C18 to rear right end and front left end. Windy Thatch, at left end, has direct
entry to inner face of front wing into principal front room, with smaller room at
rear. Rolle Arms appears to be of 2 rooms, the right-nand room heated by rear
lateral stack and Hope Cottage at right end has room to left heated by rear lateral
stack and room to right heated by gable end stack of entrance passage, with probably
kitchen wing to rear right end.
2 storeys. C19 fenestration principally intact. Hope Cottage has 3-window range,
2-light casements, 3 panes per light above 3-light casement, 8 panes per light to
left and 4 paned sash to right of C20 door with gabled hood. Rolle Arms has a 3-
light and 2-light casement, 6 panes per light on each floor and doorway at left end
close to the angle of the front wing at the left end. Windy Thatch has 2-light
casement, 6 panes per light above 4-panelled door to inner face of wing, and 3-light
casement, 6 panes per light to front end.
Interiors not inspected but may well contain early features and the roof structure
may well be medieval.
