GV II

Stables and carriage shed with loft over; now riding stables with flat over
carriage shed. Early-mid C18 with C20 alteration. Dressed sandstone to
front and coursed sandstone rubble to sides and rear, on plinth; painted
raised and chamfered quoins; pantile roof. 2-storey, 5-bay front. Central
4-panelled door with radial fanlight with round-arched doorcase of
alternately long and short quoins and voussoirs. Two 12-pane sashes with
flat arches of painted voussoirs and stone sills to each side. Squat 12-
pane windows with central opening lights to first floor, with small C20
inserted windows between end right windows. Cavetto moulded eaves course.
Rear: central board door with divided overlight beneath flat arch. Carriage
entrance to end left with harr-hung double doors in quoined opening beneath
heavy timber lintel. Plank door to left of first floor approached by stone
steps. 3 pivoting 6-pane windows with timber lintels to right of centre
door, and one to left. Stepped eaves course. Gable end to street: board
door with flat arch of voussoirs to first floor approached by stone steps.
Squat 12-pane window with timber lintel to right of steps. Coped gables and
shaped kneelers. Interior: all stalls, loose boxes and other fittings have
survived intact. The Riding Stables were built originally as the stables to
The Hall (qv).
