Detached house. C15, altered C16, refronted early C19. Square-
panelled timber-framing on stone plinth with short buttresses,
brick nogging, front rendered, stone slate roof, brick stacks to
rear. Five-bay main range with 2-bay open hall at south end, C16
parlour wing to west. Two-storey, 3-window. Six-panelled door
with flat stone hood on brackets to right of centre, 12-pane sash
to right, two sashes to left. First floor has three 9-pane sashes.
Right return is timber-framed with blocked doorway, single-light
casement to first floor. Left return has C20 ground and attic
floor casements; rendered up to top of first floor. Rear of main
range has large stone and brick added stack to hall. Rear wing has
dressed stone ground floor, timber-framed first floor; C20
conservatory to south side, 2-light or single-light casements.
Interior: Hall range has C16 inserted ceiling with moulded cross
beams, inserted lateral stack with timber lintel on stone jambs,
moulded arch-braced collar truss roof exposed to first floor;
chamfered windbraces formerly to two tiers of purlins, lower tier
removed, smoke-blackening apparently also removed; the house was
restored by Lady Long, C20. Parlour wing has restored Tudor-arched
stone fireplace to ground floor, fine moulded cross-beam ceiling
with exposed joists, Tudor-arched stone doorway between hall and
parlour, probably a former external door. First floor bedroom with
similar moulded cross beams and Tudor-arched stone fireplace, attic
over with plain collar and tie-beam roof trusses and windbracing to
purlins. Good example of a small house with high quality C16
alterations, in Steeple Ashton.
