Description

TQ 67 41 BRENCHLEY HIGH STREET, BRENCHLEY
(south side)
15/106 Matthew Diamond headstone
about llm south west of the
west door of the Church of
All Saints
GV II

Headstone. 1676. Freestone. Shouldered headstone with a round-headed arched
head. The inscription commemorates Matthew Diamond, died 1670. Rustic carving
in relief in the head includes an hourglass, scythe and head. Below the
inscription the words "Don by Robert Diamond, Son of Matthew Diamond ano domi
1676". The attribution is unusual at this date, suggesting a tradition in
which relatives (either professional or amateur masons) made headstones for
members of their family.
