House and farmhouse incorporating shop. Early C19. Coursed and squared
limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and dressings; clay tile roof with
coped verges; ashlar stacks. 2 ranges set at right angles to form a
roughly L-shaped plan with rear extensions to each. Main 2 storey range
with floor band to right and slightly lower 2 storey range to left.
Main range: 3 windows; glazing bar sashes, those to ground floor in
rusticated surrounds linked by rusticated bands, lintels incised as
voussoirs; half glazed door to right of centre and board door to left,
both with rusticated surrounds, raised keystones and bracketed moulded
hoods; sign board above left hand door; "D. SMALLEY / GENERAL STORE /
SOLE AGENTS FOR HOLDFAST BRAND / BOOTS SHOES / LICENSED TO SELL TOBACCO";
rusticated quoins; moulded stone eaves course; integral end stacks and
ridge stack to left of centre. Left hand range: 2 windows; 16-pane
glazing bar sashes,with painted sills; central door with straight hood
mould; single plate glass sash to both ground and first floor of left hand
gable end; flight of steps to gable end leads to a board door in a low
rear extension which links the house to Hobcroft cottages (q.v.).
Smalley's Stores occupy the left hand range and the left hand ground floor
bay of-the main range, the rest of the main range belongs to Hobcroft
Farmhouse.
