Block of shops with flats above. 1891-93 by Thomas and F.T. Verity.
Red brick and terracotta, slate roofs. Flemish style similar to the
related design of Nos. 34 to 42 South Audley Street by the same
architects. 4 storeys and attics. Asymmetrical 3-window fronts.
Terracotta faced range of shop fronts and doorways, the display
windows wide and transomed under entablature, those of No.24 (the
Marlborough Head P.H.) have quadrant corners to heads; shallow
pilasters, frame windows and doorways, rising to cornice with blind
decorated parapet over. Upper floors have canted or rectangular
through-storey bay windows with glazing bar sash lights. Main
entablature with patterned terracotta frieze over 2nd floor cornice
and ball finialed parapet over 3rd floor and pairs of hipped roof
dormers alternating with shaped, pedimented gables with obelisk
finials. The corner of No. 24 is advanced on splay whilst that of
No. 29 is treated as a turret with finialed dome.
