Pair of houses. Late C19. Squared limestone ashlar with
freestone quoins and dressings, brick sides and rear; slate
roof with moulded C17 style ashlar stacks to sides and rear.
Flemish Renaissance style. Double-depth plan.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with attics; symmetrical block, each house
is 2-window range. The ranges to the centre are stepped
forward under forward-facing Dutch gables with ornamental
coping and plaques to the nowy-headed apexes and ornamental
semicircular-arched openings and rainwater heads to the valley
gutter. Chamfered mouldings to 2-light windows to attics with
richly-carved festoons to the aprons, 3-light windows with a
sill string course to the 1st floor.
The 2-storey outer ranges have cornices and ornamental
parapets over 3-light windows with semicircular arched leaded
lights. To the rear of these ranges are forward-facing brick
gables. The projecting corners of the central ranges are
clasped by rectangular bays which form porches with chamfered
architraves, 6-panel doors and Tuscan columns to the outer
corners and 4-light bay windows to the inner corners. The
windows are transomed with leaded overlights.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
The finest architectural composition of a group of mid and
late C19 villas built along the Marshfield road, and forming
part of the industrial suburb built up after the arrival of
the railway.
