GV II

Wall, gate piers, railings and bollards. Mid C19. Squared
limestone rubble wall with moulded freestone coping, ashlar
gate piers, wrought-iron railings and cast-iron bollards. The
revetment wall, approx 3m high and 100m long, bounds the
churchyard to the east along St Mary Street. At the north-east
corner it sweeps up to meet gate piers with low plinths,
cornices and pyramidal caps attached to the National School on
St Mary Street (qv) where the wall projects to form a platform
approx 1.5m square at the top of a flight of 12 stone steps.
These are flanked by a handrail attached to the wall and plain
railings to the outer edge. To the south-east corner is a
similar smaller platform and railings to 7 steps. The gate
pier supporting the inside rail is part of No.15 St Mary
Street (qv). 2 tapered bollards divide the entrance from the
churchyard, the most southerly has a casting fault and the
north side has fallen away. Both flights of steps rise from
the south.
