CHIPPENHAM

ST9273SW MARKET PLACE 930-1/10/102 (East side) Nos.25A AND 25B

GV II

House on corner site of the Market Place. Early C18. Painted brick, painted freestone eaves cornice and dressings, hipped slate roof with brick stack to rear of main block and a square brick stack to rear of rear right wing. L-shaped plan. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys; 3-window range to both facades. Moulded eaves cornice; raised surrounds to upper floor windows and thick sill band to the 2nd floor; 3/3-pane sash windows to the 2nd floor, C20 cross-windows to the 1st floor, those to the left of the west facade are blocked, C20 shop windows and door to the ground floor. INTERIOR: steps down to a former road level. To the rear right of the main block is an early C18 open-well open string staircase with fretted ends and closely-spaced turned balusters, moulded swept handrail and dado rail to the wall. A small room to the 1st floor of the rear wing has early C18 full-height raised and fielded panelling, box cornice and a cyma-moulded surround to a blocked fireplace to the rear wall.
