Description

CHIPPENHAM

ST9074SE BRISTOL ROAD
930-1/2/9 No.31
22/06/78

GV II

Former stable, now a cottage. Dated 1693, altered mid/late
C19. Limestone rubble with steeply-pitched stone slate gambrel
roof, brick stacks to gable ends and 2 tall raking dormers.
2-unit plan.
EXTERIOR: single storey with attic; 3-window range. Timber
lintels to C20 windows, Stone-slate gabled porch to
left-of-centre flanked by timber lintels to C20 windows. To
the right the lintel extends from the porch almost to the
quoin and was probably the former stable entrance. The right
return has a window in the gable probably an opening to a
former hayloft. A date plaque between the right-hand windows
reads "A R A 1693" which is similar to an inscription over the
door of No.23 (qv).
INTERIOR: not inspected but noted as being altered. A cobbled
floor to the right end was exposed during alteration.
