II

Infirmary block at Wharfedale Union Workhouse. 1871-73, by CS and AJ Nelson for Wharfedale Poor Law Union. Later C19 and C20 alterations. Converted to offices late C20. Coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and hipped Welsh slate roofs with prominent coped ridge stacks. Plinth and dentillated eaves. 2 storeys; 16 window range. Windows are mainly original glazing bar sashes. Symmetrical frontage has in the centre 2 windows flanked by round arched doorways with panelled doors and fanlights, approached by stone steps. Beyond, on each side, 4 single windows, and in each end bay, paired windows. Above, similar fenestration, with 3 narrower windows in the centre. Left end has a single storey hipped projection with a door, overlight and single window. Behind this, an external stone staircase, L-plan, with a renewed balustrade, to a first floor door flanked by a single window. Right end has a similar projection, with a monopitch roof, and a straight staircase to a C20 door. At the rear, sanitary annexes, 2 storeys, that to east extended early C20.
INTERIOR: ground floor stairwells have segmental vaults, cornices and brackets. Stone cantilever dogleg staircases with wrought iron stick balusters and octagonal newels. First floor has late C20 partitioning. Original separate rooms in the end bays on each floor.
OUTSIDE:low retaining wall across the front of the building, with a pair of coped square piers in the centre.
