No.36

GV II

House, now subdivided into two dwellings. Late C17 altered and
extended C18, C19 and C20. Timber-framed and plastered, No.36
has faint masonry lining, black weatherboarding to rear
lean-to of No.38. Old tiled roof, hipped at left (west) end of
No.38, red brick chimneystack of four clustered square shafts
separated by recesses. Corbelled back corners to central
square shaft with projecting band, 4 cream terracotta pots.
Rear outshut to No.38 has Welsh slated lean-to roof, Welsh
slated outshut at rear of No.36, pantiled roof to single
storey lean-to on right (east).
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attics; former lobby entry plan when
single house, with door (now removed) against major stack
which now forms party wall between the two properties. Front
facade has scattered fenestration; first floor has 2 slightly
recessed 9-pane sash windows, with architrave surrounds, set
hard under eaves at left; 1 similar window in centre set lower
down (all No.38), and at right (No.36) 1 triple-light wood
casement window with divided glazing. Ground floor has 1 C19
sash with divided 6-pane glazing, and projecting architrave
surround and moulded cornice hood raised on consoles, with
canted oriel bay window to right with 3 sashes 4:12:4 pane
(all No.38). Far right (No.36) has 1 triple-light wood
casement, and a 4-panel door, recessed in architrave surround,
with a floating cornice hood.
Rear of No.38 has a 2-storey lean-to; first floor with C19
canted oriel bay with triple sashes at left, and 2 flush-set
9-pane sash windows, centre and right. Ground floor much
altered with C20 lean-to conservatory.
INTERIOR: No.36 has ground floor room with a beam with chamfer
and tongue stop; much renewed elsewhere. No.38 has a similar
beam in the ground floor right-hand (east) room, with red
brick fireplace with arched timber bressumer, and to right a
frame with a boarded ledged door in situ, but now blocked
behind indicating the original lobby entry arrangement. The
stair is central, rising alongside exposed C17 studwork with
carpenters' marks - this was possibly originally the west
wall. The west rooms have C19 features.

The attics indicate that the roof was raised C19, with an
earlier 'A' frame with collar against the central stack.
Cellar to No.38 has a brick floor and red brick walls.
