Castle Moat House

House. Late C16, altered and extended C18, C19. Timber-framed,
pebbledashed and colourwashed, the rear range colourwashed
roughcast over brickwork, and stucco; gabled old tiled roof
over north range, and Welsh slated roofs over centre. C19 rear
range and outshuts of red brick with yellow brick chimneys
incorporating oversailing courses. Front (west) range set at
right angles to street, late C19 east range and outshut.
EXTERIOR: 2 and 3 storeys. First floor has 2-storey canted bay
at left, with triple sashes with divided glazing, separated by
pilasters at left, sash window first floor centre above modern
half-glazed door in architrave surround with cornice hood on
shallow cut profiled brackets. 2-storey canted bay at right
with multi-pane casements. Tile weather band above
ground-floor window heads.
North elevation faces street, 2 bays, with two 12 pane wood
Yorkshire sash windows on first floor, and 2 flush set sashes
with divided glazing and architrave surrounds on ground floor.
At centre left is C19 outshut with 2 recessed 12-pane sashes
on first floor, and 3 small 4 pane casements on ground floor.
At far left (east) is a 1 bay infill which links to the raised
rear roof of the coach house and stables to No.23 (qv). 1 sash
window with margin glazing on first floor, C20 glazed door to
ground floor.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the name 'Castle Moat House' and the location
close to the double moat; on the opposite (north) side of
Castle Street mark out an early origin for the building, which
is possibly 1 of 3 houses 'without the walls' referred to in a
survey dated 1609-10; together with other properties in Castle
Street, this house lay outside the Borough in Brickendon
Liberty until mid C17.
