Pair of town houses, now an office. c1770s, built for George Croker Fox (1727-1782). Red brick on rubble with granite ashlar basement/plinth; slurried scantle slate hipped roof. Double-depth plan plus wing at rear left. 3 storeys over basement; symmetrical 2:1:2-bay front with doorways to bays flanking central bay. Mid-floor brick strings and modillion cornice to brick parapet except for turned balustrade over central bay. Flat brick arches with granite keys over original 12-pane hornless sashes including 3 sashes to each floor of central canted bay; squat 3-pane basement windows. Open-pedimented half-column pilastered doorways with panelled reveals; round-arched cobweb fanlights; panelled doors; granite steps with wreathed wrought-iron hand-rails. INTERIOR: has some original features where inspected including: moulded ceiling cornice to ground-floor room and open-well staircase with open string and ramped mahogany handrail; mahogany doors and panelled window shutters to 1st-floor front rooms. This building, which is an unusually early example of a semi-detached plan with a unified "palace" front, is part of an important group of C18 and early C19 buildings.
