Terrace of 36 houses. Early C19. Built following the
construction of the Ulverston Canal, which opened in 1796.
Rubble, roughcast at the front, with painted stone dressings,
rendered brick chimney stacks, and slate roofs (some replaced
by artificial slates).
Built in a long convex curve to follow the road from Canal
Head to the town centre, and rising from east to west so that
each house has a stepped junction with its neighbour. Nos 2-68
are in a continuous terrace, and Nos 70 & 72 are beyond the
back lane entrance and adjoin No.1 Canal Street (not
included).
Each house is of 3 storeys and one window bay with a doorway
to the left. Original openings survive to most houses,
although Nos 12 & 52 have been much altered by the enlargement
of windows, and No.30 has a timber canted bay window on the
ground floor. The rear elevations have exposed stone walls,
long staircase windows, and windows with segmental heads.
