Sheffield High School for Girls

GV II

House, now part of Sheffield High School for Girls (qv).
c1875, with mid C20 additions. Rock-faced stone with ashlar
dressings and slate roofs with various stacks. Tudor Revival
style.
EXTERIOR: plinth, quoins, first floor sillband, coped gables.
3 storeys; 2 x 2 windows. Entrance front has to right a gable
with a 2-storey canted bay window topped with a roofed
balcony. On the lower floors, a 2-light stone mullioned cross
casement flanked by single light windows. Pent-roofed balcony
has 3 shouldered openings and pierced balustrades, and coped
gables ending in pedestals topped with ball finials. Above the
balcony, a triangular 4-light window with stone mullions.
Entrance bay, to left, has deep machicolated and crenellated
parapet. On the upper floors, a stone mullioned cross casement
flanked by single light windows. Below, a chamfered
flat-headed doorway with recessed half-glazed Tudor arched
door with mullioned overlight. To its left, a small single
window. Right return has a large external side wall stack.
Garden front has 2 gables flanked by pedestals with ball
finials. To left a square 2-storey bay window with crenellated
parapet and a 3-light stone mullioned cross casement on each
floor. Above, in the gable, a 3-light stone mullioned window
with moulded surround and stepped head. To right, a canted 2
storey bay window with crenellated parapet and a stone
mullioned cross casement on each floor, flanked by single
light windows. Above, a 2-light stone mullioned window. Right
gable has an external stack, flanked by single light windows
on the lower floors and above by a single window to left.
