14/06/74 Walls, gates, and outbuilding to
No.162 Brook House
(Formerly Listed as:
CHURCH STREET, Upwey
(East side)
Outbuilding of No.162 and garden
wall to road)
GV II
Boundary walls with gates and railings, and stable, now
outbuilding. Late C18 and early C19. Stone and brick, wrought-
and cast-iron; the outbuilding without roof covering (formerly
slate) at time of survey. Late C18 and early C19.
The boundary walls are all in rubble or coursed stone, backed
with brickwork; to Church Street the wall rises to a plain
coping at approx 2m, with a square dressed stone pier with
capping to the left. Opposite the house frontage it is reduced
to a plinth level, and carries railings in 3 bays each side of
a central gate, with a further wood gate to the far right. At
each end of this section are rendered piers with ball finials.
The wall returns to the right, at the left-hand end of the
facade, and encloses the garden to NW and NE.
Beyond the left-hand pier on Church Street is an opening
approx 3m wide, then a small square rubble outbuilding,
originally a stable or carriage house, with half-hipped roof,
in 2 storeys, with a square plank loading bay to the street
above a wide blocked opening. INTERIOR: simple purlin roof.
Towards the house, facing a small enclosed courtyard, is a
pair of wide plank doors.
