House, part of small group. Late C18. Rubble, hipped slate
roof.
EXTERIOR: an L-plan building on 3 floors, backing directly on
the River Wey. The windows are generally sash in plat band
surrounds and to stone sills.
The short hipped end facing the street has a 12-pane above
15-pane, these each with flush alternating jamb stones, and at
ground floor a large late C19 square bay to hipped roof with
casements. The return front, facing S has 2 small 4-pane at
the eaves, above a 4-pane and 12-pane (4 panes wide), plus a
small 6-pane casement, and at ground floor a 4-pane and C19
glazed door with shallow transom light. Across the internal
angle is a rubble wall under a slate roof.
The return wing, facing the road, has an 8-pane at the eaves,
a 12- and 16-pane plus a fixed 6-pane at first floor, and a
4-pane to the ground floor. The end gable is plain. There are
2 ridge stacks, and a gable stack at the right-hand end. The
rear wall has 3x3 sashes, some with bars, and 2 small inserted
lights.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: immediately right of the gable to the
road is a short section of wall with a pointed arch over a
plank door, and with 2 carved stone pelicans above. These were
originally at Nottington House, now demolished, and are part
of the Stewart family crest. The property was formerly called
the 'Boarding House', and was built in connection with the Spa
(qv), which is immediately opposite.
