Detached villa in own grounds. c1830/1840, extended early C20.
Portland stone, slate roofs.
PLAN: original main Tudoresque range faces E, and is linked by
gateway facing long narrow courtyard to a service block; large
matching range was added to SW early in the C20.
EXTERIOR: 2 storeys; E range has paired haunched gables and a
recessed centre with slightly projecting porch; windows are
generally recessed wood mullioned casements, and with moulded
labels. Left gable has small blind lancet above a 3-light; at
ground floor is a deep 2-light, 4-centred small-pane window
with arched heads to the lights, all in an angled projecting
bay. Above the porch is a 2-light, and in the right gable a
stone gabled oriel with 3-light, on 4 brackets, is above a
deep 2-light with margin panes. The porch, with parapet raised
at the centre above a carved lion rampant, has a wide
4-centred opening with label and carved spandrels on double
chamfered jambs. The porch, on 2 stone steps, has an inner
glazed door. There are lofty brick stacks on ridge left of the
centre, to the right, and at eaves of the courtyard return.
A stone wall with parapet to a raised centre, and set slightly
forward to the adjoining blocks, contains elliptical-arched
doorway and studded plank door. To right the gabled range has
an oriel similar to that to the left, but with a small blind
lancet under deep dropped label above the window. Lofty brick
stack to the right eaves.
Building returns across the end of the courtyard, which has
various sash and casement windows.
The S front, original range, has a projecting gable to the
left, with a lancet, a 3-light, and a one-storey flat-roofed
canted bay with full-height casements. To the right is an
oriel raised as a gabled dormer, with blind lancet and 3-light
casement over pair of French doors. To the left of this range
is the 2-bay added range.
INTERIOR: not generally accessible. The entrance lobby, on
Portland stone slabs, has various Gothick 4-panel doors in
linings, and beyond is the staircase hall, with a long lateral
stair to the right on entry; this has a solid string, stick
balusters and a mahogany handrail, returned to the landing at
first floor.
