Garden ornament. C18 Portland stone sphinx, based on classical antique Egyptian model and one of a pair situated on either side of a mid C19 flight of steps. Sphinx is about 5 feet long in a crouching position and set on a rectangular moulded stone base. Probably in this position from the time the rose garden was laid out.
