49/262

II

Barn. Probably late C17. Timberframed barn clad in weatherboarding on sandstone
base. Old tiled roof hipped to left, gable ended to right. Tall cart entrance
to road,3 bays. Jowled upright posts. Queenpost roof with through purlins. No
ridgepiece. Some later nailed diagonal struts for strengthening. Wall frame has
mid rail and curved tension braces to ends and in central bay. Some reused timbers
in wall plate and roof. One bay has had curved braces from the tie beam removed and
a vertical timber inserted with a midrail partition but there is no indication
that this end was ever floored. Outshuts on three sides; to left with animal
feeding troughs and thick elm weatherboarding beneath it to rear with sawn timbers and
to right with some vertical planks.
