FARNHAM LANE (East Side)
Royal Naval School Main Building (Formerly Stoatley Hall)
II
1902 dated on plaque above porch. Romantic country house with elaborate medievalistic and Tudorish detail. Entrance front of shallow V-shape, very irregular with large central porch projection and canted bay projection at right. Two storeys at left and centre, one tall storey at right. Tiled roof with tall brick chimneys. Courses rubble masonry, freestone quoins and dressings including window mullions and transoms. In right "hall" section lights have cusped heads and there is a continuous drip mould with grotesque bird and animal carvings. Diagonal buttresses flank four-centred porch entrance with peaked parapet over. Porch itself is rib-vaulted with brick panels.
Inside is quasi-C17 staircase with thick balusters. Also a panelled hall with Ionic screen and upper gallery having coved soffit. Two good chimney-pieces with glazed tiles.
