Description

WARE TOWN

TL31NW WESTMILL STREET
829-1/1/188 (North side)
Gates and gate piers to Ware
Cemetery north extension

II

Gates and gate piers forming entrance from north side of
Westmill Road to the Ware Cemetery north extension, laid out
in 1894. The gates and piers appear to be earlier, of a mid
C19 pattern. Cast-iron, piers with projecting plinths, pierced
shaft with moulded guilloche ornament and boldly projecting
caps, with cyma recta mouldings. The gates, in twin leaves,
have cylindrical cast-iron shafts, a horizontal middle rail,
below which the shafts are doubled, and downward swept curved
top rails. The shafts terminate above the middle and top rails
in spearheads flanked by twin crescents.
