GV II

Maltings. Circa late 1840s; remodelled in late C19. Yellow
stock brick. Flemish bond at east end which has lower pantile
roof and English bond at late C19 rebuilt west end with slate
roofs; east end weatherboarded. Long rectangular plan range
with rebuilt west kiln end. 3-storey 9-bay with small
segmentally-headed windows with brick pilasters between;
weatherboarded to left (east) with projecting gabled hoist
housing. Large square 3-storey kiln on right (west) with
pyramidal slate roof with a rectangular slate hung cowl with
louvres; flanking left 4-storey 3-bay range with gabled slate
canopy over hoist door on left and flanking right (west) a
lower 2-storey and attic range with gabled west end.
INTERIOR: kiln has superstructure for lowering germinated
barley into the kiln. Late C19 alterations post-dated
abolition of the Malt Tax in 1880.
