Singer sarcophagus north-east of
Anglican Chapel at Torquay Cemetery

Sarcophagus commemorating Isaac Merritt Singer, d.1875, and
other members of the family. Signed by the Monumental Company,
Kensal Green. White Italian marble on a polished grey granite
plinth with steps and enclosed by a fence of polished grey
granite posts with chains slung between. Renaissance style.
The sarcophagus has corbelled diagonal buttresses and a coped
oversailing lid. Lavish carving includes passion flowers, corn
stalks and vines. Inscription panels on all four sides with
foliage-carved frames. A sumptuous monument to the founder of
the Singer Sewing Machine Company, who financed the building
of Oldway in Paignton (qv). Reported to have cost 'several
thousand pounds'.
