26.2.54 Octagon Chapel

Former Presbyterian Chapel, now Unitarian Chapel. 1756 by Thomas Ivory.
Red brick. Pantile roof. Octagonal plan. Single storey with gallery.
2 bays to each side, except for the entry face :- 3 bays. Central 2-leaf
door with semi-circular arch and moulded surround. Single-storeyed pedimented
portico with 4 unfluted Ionic columns and 2 pilasters. 5 steps up. The door
is flanked by sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick segmental arches.
3 sash windows above with glazing bars and semi-circular rubbed brick arch and
top sash. Bracket cornice. Pyramidal roof with small dormer in each bay with
semi-circular head and round windows. Wrought-iron pinnacle on top of roof.
Very good interior detail with giant Corinthian columns and wooden galleries
between.
