Tower of
St Bartholomew's
Church
II
Church tower, now redundant. 1895 by P H Currey. Red brick
with gritstone dressings. Square in plan, tapering slightly,
with three chamfered stringcourses. Saddleback pantiled roof.
Battered gritstone plinth. Red brick above. The east and west,
and north and south facades are virtually identical. To the
east and west the ground stage has two tall lancets. The second
stage is blind. The tall third stage has broad pilaster strips
either side of a circular clock face. Decorative
machicolation-like motif above with tiny round-arched
bell-openings at the top. The south elevation has a segmental
arched doorway to the ground floor, a small lancet above, the
tall third stage with pilaster strips either side of the
circular clock face. Broad louvred bell openings above. The
tower stands almost detached at the north west corner of the
church, which has been altered, so as no longer to be of special
interest.
