Description

TEWKESBURY

SO8932 SWILGATE ROAD
859-1/6/340 (South side (off))
27/07/73 Footbridge over River Swilgate

II

Footbridge over River Swilgate. c1850. Cast-iron, brick,
sandstone. Narrow footway carried on 2 cast-iron plates
supported on brick central pier and abutments, capped in
weathered sandstone. The plates are reinforced with 2 ribs
each under the walkway, and have edge beams which rise to the
centre. Balustrade has plain vertical rails and handrail
stayed by iron scroll supporters, carried on projecting
brackets cast with main plates and continued 2 bays beyond the
opening each end: there are 7 bays with 8 supporters each
side. The brick abutments are splayed out, and are pierced by
trimmed elliptical flood-water openings. Concrete paving at
outer ends. Total length approx 10m.
A characteristically direct piece of C19 engineering, but
without identifying founder or other information. The
footbridge is still in constant use.
