II
Situated within the grounds of Gloucester Lodge, north of St Leonards Gardens, which were the Subscription Gardens of James Burton's original lay-out of St Leonards, is a small monument to James Burton erected later in the C19. This consists of a short pink granite obelisk with a rounded head, standing on a plinth with a semi-circular basin in front of it and a fountain pipe above the plinth emitting a jet of water into the basin. Towards the head of the obelisk is a bronze plaque of Burton's profile with the words "James Burton, Founder of St Leonards, 1828. Born 1761. Died 1837." beneath the plaque.
