HIGH STREET (south side)
No 51A

(Formerly listed as Cheltenham & Gloucester Building Society, HIGH STREET)

20.6.73

GV
II
Office, formerly house. C17 with probable earlier remains and later C20 alterations. Limestone rubble with remains of cruck frame and thatched roof. One storey with attic. On the ground floor is a wide C20 square bay window with glazing bars. Two thatched attic dormers. Doorway, at right, has plain reveals. Chimney on left-hand gable. Left-hand gable wall has attic window with two small chamfered lights cut from a single stone.

Interior: early part of building is now a single room. Against the left-hand gable wall is a stone inglenook fireplace with timber bressumer. A single central cruck truss has had the original tie-beam cut through. Bolted to it is a C20 raised tie-beam and a collar. The attic floor has been removed and the building is ceiled at collar level. Rafters, purlins and wind-braces are exposed, although some of the timber appears to be renewed.
