House, now Bridgewater School. "BT 1855" above door. Timber-framed with slate and graduated stone slate roof. 6 bays and 2 storeys with wings to rear possibly of an incorporating earlier work and C20 addition to left which is not included in this entry. Picturesquely composed asymmetrical elevation with 2-storey porch in bay 3, gables in bays 1 and 5 and gabled dormer windows in bays 2 and 4. Gabled porch, the upper room resting on circular columns via carved brackets. The panelling in the gable is decorative and below the 5-light timber mullion window is the Bridgewater coat of arms. The principal room in bay 4 has an 8-light mullion and transom window which is set in behind an enriched bressumer on carved diagonal braces. Other windows are 4 and 5-light mullion and transoms on the ground floor (the latter a square bay window) and 3 and 4-light mullioned windows on the first floor. 4 brick ridge chimney stacks with diagonally set shafts. A 5-light window at rear with arched lights and flush chamfered mullions may be reused from an earlier building. Interior: panelled doors, a timber staircase, various fire surrounds in stone and cast iron and ovolo-moulded ceiling beams to the principal room which has a neo-Jacobean fire surround. In the C16 an earlier house on the site was the home of the Massey family.
