SD 42SE MUCH HOOLE LIVERPOOL OLD ROAD

7/72 Church Farmhouse
20.3.1979
GV II

Farmhouse, early C17, extended in late C17, altered in C18; now house.
Red brick with diaper work of vitrified headers, stone quoins, roof of
stone slates, and slates at rear; one cut-down chimney at the junction,
one rebuilt on ridge. L-shaped plan: 1½ bay hall part (early C17) with
outshut, 2-bay projecting crosswing on the left (late C17). Two storeys,
a door in front wall next to wing, another in left return wall of wing;
C19 casement windows of 2, 3 and 4 lights, some under shallow segmental
relieving arches; evidence of former 3-light mullioned attic windows in
both gables of wing. Two-storey outshut now continuous but of 3 different
builds. Interior: hall part has inglenook with heck and bressummer,
¼-ground moulded beams, flagged floor; parlour has beams with stopped rounded
chamfer; timber-framed 1st floor partition between ranges suggests original
timber framed building. Other features include batten arid board doors, and
C18 corner cupboard with fluted pilasters and dentilled cornice. Building
has group value in relation to church of St. Michael (q.v.) opposite.
