8/113 Blocked doorway
Doorway. Dated 1607. Limestone ashlar. Moulded Tudor-arched
doorway with hoodmould. Weathered coping steps up over doorway and
fits around rectangular inscription stone. Inscription reads: 'N.
M. M. H./ S. P. N. C./ ANNO DMI. 1607'. Initials represent: Nunc
mei, mox hujus, sed postea, nescio cujus. Translated: Today 'tis
mine, Tomorrow, thine, but whose next day I cannot say. Remains of
contemporary plank door still in position. This is thought to be
the entrance to John Smyth's house, reputedly destroyed in the
course of a family quarrel.
