GV II

Shown on OS map as Tredidon Barton. Farmhouse. Late C16 origins, extended
C17, further extended and remodelled late C18/early C19; minor later additions
and alterations. Rendered slate-stone, slate-hung to front gable end of
projecting range; slate roof, hipped to late late C18/early C19 addition.
Basic T-plan comprising late C16 range aligned roughly north-west to south-east,
extended to south-east in C17 with late C18/early C19 addition in 3 slightly
irregular bays has 16-paned glazing bar sashes, all unhorned except lower right,
with entrance to left. This has half-glazed door with semi-circular fanlight
under C19 wooden Doric porch given gently sloping lean-to roof in C20. Projecting
range has two 16-paned glazing bar sashes on each floor. Pyramidal capped
wooden lantern with bell to centre of ridge and slate-hung ridge stack at junction
C16 range. Gable end has single-storey lean-to attached, screened from garden
by front wall with chamfered 4-centred granite arch (not in situ). Lean-to
itself has segmental-headed wooden doorway with recessed boarded door; tall
stepped stack attached to farmyard side. Rear (late C16) range, also re-
fenestrated late C18/early Cl9, has paired 16-paned glazing bar sashes directly
below eaves and 24-paned glazing bar sashes to ground floor, all with crown
glass. Prominent stack to farmyard side next to half-glazed door with paired
Gothic lights.
Interior: Entrance hall of late C18/early C19 part has contemporary open-well
staircase with moulded wreathed and ramped handrail and thin stick balusters
in imitation of cast-iron to carved open string. Early C19 clock built into
wall above staircase. Room to right of entrance hall has plaster frieze with
vine-leaf decoration and moulded cornice. Several other rooms have plaster
cornices and panelled window shutters throughout. Wall to left of entrance
hall is original outside wall of C16 house and has granite doorway with 4-centred
arch, hollow spandrels and moulded jambs facing hall. C17 addition has inset
wall cupboard with small drawers and late C18 blind Gothic-traceried panelled
doors to one room on ground floor. Barrel-vaulted plaster ceiling to C16 range
on first floor. Collar truss roof in 5 bays to C16 part but roof to C17 addition
(which may in fact be a rebuilding of a C16 range) rebuilt in C19 or early
C20. The deeds of the house are said to go back to 1474 indicating an earlier
building on the site.
