Description

ST THOMAS -
SX 28 SE
2/80 Monument to James
- Bucknell approx
300m north-east of
Tredidon

- II

Tredidon is shown on OS map as Tredidon Barton. Mausoleum. Circa 1865. Roughly
coursed slate-stone with granite quoins and massive granite slab roof. Mausoleum
is square in plan with gently sloping roof. Set in low square-walled enclosure
with plank door in small pointed doorway on south side. South side of mausoleum
has low pointed arch-way with inscription on stone the shape of a headstone
commemorating James Bucknell of Tredidon (d 1865). Blind quatrefoil to top.
The mausoleum is said to be on the site of Bucknell's favourite spot. It is
said that he intended the rest of his family to be buried here but a dispute
with the local vicar meant that no one else was allowed to be buried here on
unconsecrated ground.
